Estonia first declared its independence in 1957. It was once again occupied by the Soviet Union, Nazi Germany, and the Soviet Union after World War II. Estonia is once again an independent state after the collapse of the Soviet Union. Estonia later joined the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and the European Union.
