Money & Duty Free Pakistan

The Pakistani rupee has been the official currency of Pakistan since 1948. The coins and notes are issued and controlled by the central bank, namely State Bank of Pakistan.

 

Import regulations:

The following goods may be imported into Pakistan without incurring customs duty: Residents 18 years of age and older:

a. 200 cigarettes or 50 cigars or 1/2 kilogram of tobacco;

b. 1/4 liter of eau de toilette and perfume, of which not more than 1/8th liter may be perfume;

c. gift articles and/or souvenirs in a reasonable number and quantity:

- first visit in one calendar year: value not more than PKR 2,000.-;

- second visit in one calendar year: value not more than PKR 1,000.-;

- third or subsequent visits: not duty free.

 

Residents under 18 years: no free import. They are subject to payment of customs duties for any articles acquired abroad, whether used or not. Allowed for:

- first visit in one calendar year: value not more than PKR 1,000.-;

- second visit in one calendar year: value not more than PKR 500.-;

 

Warning: import of alcoholic beverages is strictly prohibited for both residents and non-residents regardless of their nationality.

 

Prohibited: matches, fruits, plants and plant material (incl. cut flowers) whether live or dead unless accompanied with Phytosanitary (Health) certificate from the country of origin and import permit from the Pakistan Ministry of Agriculture (Department of Plant Protection).

 

Arms and Ammunition regulations: Import permit and arms license required.

 

Export regulations: Free export of 200 cigarettes or 50 cigars or 1/2 pound of tobacco;

 

Restriction: export permit required for items other than those mentioned under free export . However, export permit will be issued on presentation of foreign currency exchange coupon for any item(s) up to the total value of PKR 75,000.-.

 

Applicable to either foreigners or nationals of Pakistan residing abroad, who pay a short visit to Pakistan.

 

Prohibited: antiquities.

 

Pets: Must be accompanied by a veterinarian certificate.

Pets may enter as passenger's checked baggage, in the cabin or as cargo.

 

Prohibited: live animals and birds arriving from China (People's Rep.).

Baggage Clearance regulations: Baggage is cleared at the first airport of entry in Pakistan.
