History, Language & Culture Niger
After gaining independence from France in 1960, Niger ruled the country through a one-party system and military rule until 1991 when General Ali Saibou accepted a multi-party election. This led to the establishment of a democratic government in 1993. However, internal conflicts led to political stagnation, until 1996 a coup led by Ibrahim Bare in 1999 led the military. A coup was made to defeat Colonel Ibrahim Bare and held an election, where Mamadou Tandja won the election and became president in December 1999, and was later elected for another term in the year. 2004
