History, Language & Culture Benin
During the colonial period and at independence, the country was known as Dahomey. On 30 November 1975, it was renamed to Benin. "Dahomey changed its name to the Republic of Benin (Republique du Benin) in memory of pre-19th century greatness of Ancient Benin of Nigeria", referring to the historic Kingdom of Benin.
The official language is French.
