Walking Tour of Vukovar

 Vukovar-Syrmia, Croatia

The city of Vukovar’s had a tough time in recent years. During Croatia’s War for Independence with Yugoslavia in the Nineties, the town was completely destroyed after an 87-day siege called the Battle of Vukovar. During this guided walking tour of the city, you’ll see a few scars of the conflict up close. From the port in Vukovar’s centre, you’ll set off through the streets to your first stop – the destroyed water tower. This 50-metre-tall monument’s riddled with bullet holes, and it paints a pretty clear picture of how intense the fighting was. When you’ve taken a few photos, you’ll visit the City Museum, which is housed in an 18th-century Baroque castle. You’ll be shown around its exhibits, which tick off over 8,000 years of history. Plus, you’ll see what the Battle of Vukovar was like during a wander around the photo and video displays. Before heading back to the port, you’ll stroll through the pedestrianised zone – the city’s main shopping area. Here, you’ll be able to get your hands on the city’s most popular souvenir – a ceramic dove statue that’s displayed as a symbol of peace in Vukovar.
